Theatre Technician training

By obtaining a Certificate or Diploma in Perioperative Theatre Technology, you can embark on a rewarding career as part of the support team during minor and major surgeries.

Perioperative theatre technology refers to the comprehensive care provided to patients before, during and after surgery. The goal of PTT services is to provide safe, effective and efficient care to patients undergoing surgery.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Preparing the operating room — setup of the surgical table, instrument arrangement and sterility maintenance.
  • Assisting the surgical team — instrument handling, tissue retraction and patient positioning support.
  • Sterilising and managing instruments — cleaning, disinfection and sterilisation to prevent infections.
  • Maintaining equipment — ensuring medical equipment functionality and calibration.
  • Providing technical support — assistance with anaesthesia machines and surgical lasers.
  • Infection control — following strict hygiene practices for operating-room safety.

Certificate Entry Requirements

  • ✓ KCSE mean grade C- (minus), or
  • ✓ Equivalent qualifications as determined by KNQA

Diploma Entry Requirements

  • ✓ KCSE mean grade C (plain) and above, or
  • ✓ Passed TVET CDACC examinations for the Certificate in PTT, or
  • ✓ Equivalent qualifications as determined by KNQA

Course Duration

  • Certificate: 1 year
  • Diploma: 1.5 years
  • ✓ Both include coursework, clinical rotations at Beta Care Hospital and partner facilities, a 3-month industrial attachment, and a 3-month internship (1 trimester = 3 months).

Attachment, Internship & Certification

  • ✓ Industrial attachment: 3 months in a recognised hospital with an operating theatre
  • ✓ Internship: 6 months upon graduation in a recognised hospital with an operating theatre
  • ✓ Continuous internal assessments by BCTI and external competence assessment by TVET CDACC
  • ✓ Certificate awarded by TVET CDACC and Beta Care Training Institute (BCTI)
  • ✓ Certificate holders may advance to the Diploma (1.5 years)

Fees & Intake

  • Registration: Kshs. 1,000
  • Food & accommodation (boarders): Kshs 9,000 per month or 27,000 per trimester — bed & mattress, 3 meals daily, free WiFi, hot showers, security.
  • Intakes: January, May, September — Next Reporting Date: September 2026.
