Perioperative Theatre Technicians are allied healthcare professionals. After completion of the program, students will be skilled at peri-operatively preventing nosocomial infections, providing perioperative theatre technical services to the theatre team, ensuring perioperative safety of patients and the theatre team, and maintaining operation theatre instruments and apparatus. Common duties include arranging surgical instruments before surgery, sterilizing instrumentation before surgery, cleaning surgical instruments after surgery, carrying out Surgeons’ commands during surgery and taking care of anesthesia equipment.
This course is designed to equip an individual with competencies required to participate in provision of perioperative services in a hospital set up. It focuses on actual operating room procedures. Students also learn through lab studies and internships in hospital operating rooms.
The total duration of the course is 1.5 years, which includes one year of coursework followed by 3 months of Industrial Attachment and internship each.
An individual entering this course should have any of the following minimum requirements:
- Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) mean grade D (plain)
- Equivalent qualifications as determined by Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA)
You must undergo an industrial attachment for a period of 3 months in a recognized hospital with an operation theatre.
The graduate will undertake a 6 months internship in a recognized hospital with an operation theatre.
There will be:
- Continuous internal assessments coordinated by BCTI
- External assessments coordinated by TVET CDACC
If successfully completed, the candidate will be awarded a certificate by TVET CDACC and Beta Care Training Institute.
